Chapter 13
From somewhere off to her left, her phone rang. The shrill old-fashioned ringtone was sharp in that fuzzy place between sleep and awake.
Alex was already out of bed and reaching for the phone.
Hannah! Kita jumped up.
Alex was speaking calmly into the cell. “Uh-huh. Uh-huh.”
Was that her phone? She wasn’t panicked exactly, but what the hell?
“See you in a few.”
Alex clicked the off button and tossed the phone back on the dresser. His. Not hers.
“It was Shep.” Alex snatched up the scrub bottoms from the bedroom floor. Last night’s mistake was strewn over the carpeting like beer bottles from a frat party.
Kita tried not to flush when Alex tossed her panties at her.
“Not anthrax.”
Tension flew out of her body in a whoosh of relief.
“What—” she cleared her throat. “What was it?”
Alex tugged his shirt over his head and ran his fingers through his disheveled hair, trying to put himself back together after last night’s romp. “Splenda.”
Thank God.
“So we’re clear.” Alex headed for the door. “Shep, Dwayne, and the judge will be here in two hours.”
“Here?” So they were stuck here?
“The consensus was to move the judge into a more secure location.” Alex paused, looked over her shoulder at the rumpled bed. “We’ve got the day shift. Shep and Dwayne have the night shift.”
They were going to continue to work together. Usually Kita didn’t care if she saw her sexual partners again. The act was intimate and yet usually a certain distance opened up between her and her conquest after they did the deed.
But with Alex, he brought up emotions and feelings that she’d like to forget.
And forget was exactly what she wanted regarding last night. That weird connection that wrapped around them in bed was false, like a glittering lure to an unsuspecting fish. She wanted to believe there was a happy ending at the tip of the hook. She couldn’t count on that, because if life had taught her one thing, it was that people you got close to let you down.
It was only a matter of time. Better to not get too attached in the first place.
She rubbed her wrist. Forget that she’d bared far more than her body to this temporary lover.
She’d told him about her mother.
What the hell had she been thinking?
She flushed again.
“They’re bringing over our bags.”
“Good. Great. Well…” Ugh. She had no idea what to say to him. He wouldn’t meet her gaze, so she guessed he was as clueless and uncomfortable about how to proceed as she was. There weren’t any rules to follow regarding what had just happened. So she would have to make up her own.
For a moment, she wanted that closeness back. Wanted to shelter in his embrace and hope for that connection to grow.
A hollow pit opened in her stomach, expanding in an ever-growing blob and threatening to swallow her whole. Of course he was backing away. People let you down. If her own mother couldn’t stand her, why would she think anyone else would stick by her?
“Yeah.” Alex opened the bedroom door.
